My Coaching Philosophy

September 7, 2020 by lauramccaffrey

My philosophy on coaching women in STEM is that we must take a multi-pronged approach and use all of the tools in our toolbox so that we can create a life that feels as good to live as it looks on paper.

Our lives are nuanced and we must often sit with the paradox that naturally exists in so many aspects of our lives.

We are structure and flow. Straight line and spiral. Tough and flexible.

Our coaching practice needs to reflect that nuance and embrace the paradox.

So when we work together, we’ll use all of the strategy, all of the tools.

We’ll use thought work and evaluate systems of oppression.

We’ll ask ourselves where we’ve been complicit, obedient. But we’ll be gentle with ourselves and not shame or judge.

We’ll use logic and intuition.

Analysis and embodiment.

We’ll have our sitting practice along with our rewilding.

We can be both engineer and witch.

And we’ll do all of this so we can show up whole and be an example of what’s possible.

The world is waiting for us. Let’s show them who we are and what we’re capable of.

Be Unreasonable

August 31, 2020 by lauramccaffrey

Our brains want us to make decisions based on what it thinks is safe.

It tells us to be reasonable.

But what constitutes reasonable?

Usually it’s a decision that we’ve already been practicing, making over and over again.

And that decision making process got you to where you are now.

So if you want to create different results, maybe it’s time to be a bit unreasonable.

What if you make a decision based on possibility?

You have to break out of the groove to find your new trajectory.

The one that leads to you creating the life that you want.

So go ahead. Get uncomfortable.

Be unreasonable.

Quiet Folks and Introverts Make Great Leaders Too

August 24, 2020 by lauramccaffrey

A reminder that just because your leadership doesn’t look like the status quo doesn’t mean that it’s wrong or that you need to change how you show up.

It’s ok to be a quiet, introverted leader.

Listening deeply is a leadership skill.

Feeling deeply is a leadership skill.

Reflection is a leadership skill.

Empathy is a leadership skill.

Thinking before speaking is a leadership skill.

There’s enough room for the full spectrum of leadership expression, especially in STEM fields where so often we see only one style of leadership expressed.

And you, leading from exactly where and who you are, can mean the world to the people around you.

Effective leadership comes in many flavors.

Are you ready to fully embrace your full self in service of creating a life that feels great to live, both at home and at work? I want to work with you! Book your free consult here.

You Are Not Broken

August 17, 2020 by lauramccaffrey

I want you to know that you’re not broken.

As women, we can get caught up trying to fix ourselves.

Fix our bodies.

Fix our relationships.

Fix our careers.

Fix our parenting.

But wanting to make change from a place of thinking we’re broken is an uphill battle.

We can’t hate ourselves into a new and better place.

What if you could make change from a place of knowing that you are absolutely amazing just as you are?

And that making the change isn’t going to fix the way you feel.

But making a change because it’s exciting, fun, and wanting to be an example of what’s possible is a different story.
That’s the good stuff.
Let’s see what possibilities are out there for you.

I have appointments available this week for free consultations. If you’re ready to explore what’s possible for your life, click here to book your time.

Being the adult

August 10, 2020 by lauramccaffrey

I found myself telling my kid today (not once, not twice, but three times) YOU NEED TO REMEMBER WHO THE PARENT IS IN THIS SITUATION.

And ok, maybe that was a little aggressive, but it got me thinking, sometimes we do this to ourselves too!

We can be rough with ourselves and controlling to resist looking at what’s really going on.

But to create change, we must acknowledge what our brains are trying to tell us with as little judgement as possible.

When we can tell our brain or our inner child that they’re seen and heard and we’ve got things under control, we can then calm ourselves down when we’re feeling all the feels.

We can reassure ourselves that we’re willing to look at this stuff, not ignore it, not buffer or numb, not resist.

Just be with it and let it move through the body.
Feeling our feelings is a part of emotional adulthood.

If you want to learn some tools for processing your emotions and managing your mind, come work with me!

Remembering

August 3, 2020 by lauramccaffrey

So much of the work I’ve done over the last 7 years has been a process of remembering.

I don’t have a ton of memories from my childhood or teen years, but I remember what I enjoyed doing.

Incorporating those things back into my life has been the biggest gift that I’ve given myself.

Permission to like what I like. Permission to know myself.

This is how I found my home within me.

If you’re interested in coming home to yourself, and finding out how it can enrich every part of your life, I’d love to be your coach.
