Authenticity > Approval

We shouldn’t have to pretend to be something we’re not when we’re at work.

I was at a conference last year for women in the energy industry.

One piece of advice that a speaker gave regarding fitting in at work was to learn what the guys liked, and if that’s not something you’re into, then get into it so that you can be part of their crowd.

This really didn’t sit right with me.

Why should we have to pretend to be interested in something we’re genuinely not interested in?

I’m all for respecting everyone’s stuff, but I’m not going to fake it to get you to like me.

And I wouldn’t expect someone else to do that to gain favor with me. I’m not going to be the “cool girl” just to make anyone more comfortable.

Our integrity and authenticity is worth more than that.
